A little about me and the florida startup blog

October 2, 2008

After my initial post, which said nothing about who I am, I thought a bit of a bio/explanation might be useful.

I’m Eric Norlin, and I never set out to be an enterpreneur. My “official bio” will give you some idea about my life before I “got into the software business” (degree in south asian studies, gov’t service, stock broker). But it took until the dotcom bust for me to really figure out that I’m an entrepreneur at heart.

In January, 2002, I was living in Denver, Colorado and helped to start two companies - Digital ID World and Ping Identity. Digital ID World (DIDW) is a technology conference about identity management that was sold to IDG in the summer of 2005. DIDW continues to run as one of the most important “industry events” for folks in the identity management business. Ping Identity is still alive (and whipping butt) as well. I was Ping’s VP of Marketing from 2002 until 2005. I saw Ping go from angel funding through Series C, and chose to walk away when we sold Digital ID World.

DIDW’s sale facilitated my move to Florida — where I found myself vacationing (and my wife grew up). I now live on Siesta Key. At this point, I run two technology conferences: Defrag (now in it’s 2nd year) and Glue (which is launching in May, 2009). Most of my “connections” are in the San Francisco, Denver/Boulder, Botson areas.

I’m not terribly connected to the Florida startup scene — which is party of the reason that I wanted to get involved in this blog. There *are* tech startups down here, and not just life sciences stuff. I know I read about them! ;-)

So, please, be in touch (enorlin AT mac.com). I’d love to A) profile your startup; B) feature a guest post; C) get to know the community more; D) hear all of your ideas.
